Andreas Schwab’s visit
As part of his summer tour, South Baden’s CDU Member of the European Parliament, Dr Andreas Schwab, together with the Lord Mayor of Oberndorf, Hermann Acker, visited Karl-Heinz Lange GmbH+Co.KG in Oberndorf.
The reason for the visit was for them to see the firm’s new building, which was co-financed with resources from the EU’s ERDF programme. This programme supports projects to promote regional development in areas with underdeveloped infrastructure. During his visit, Mr Schwab’s main interest was to see how the funds made available had been used. “At Lange, the development funds have been put to good use in creating jobs locally”, said Dr Schwab, “which means that Lange has used its investments to get into shape for the challenges of the future”.
In an interview with the managing directors, Karl-Heinz Lange and Ralf Lange, the two men told the MEP about the problems faced by a medium-sized business. The managers laid particular emphasis on the increasing lack of specialised labour. Lange, they said, has the capacity to create more new jobs immediately, but the staff they need are not available on the employment market. Over the years, employees specialising in heating, plumbing, carpentry and bricklaying have joined the company in order to retrain. “Making greater use of speciality skills from other countries of the EU in order to deal with a shortage of skilled workers would be a good approach”, said Dr Schwab. On the ensuing guided tour of the company, the managing directors showed the MEP the new premises. “We have craftsmanship, services and industry all under one roof. This broad mission is what got us through the crisis”, said Lange.
As part of his 14-day summer tour, Dr Schwab visited many businesses in his constituency. He will take his impressions – and the suggestions of the business community – back with him to his parliamentary work, in order to provide effective support to regional businesses. Open markets within a functioning European single market and the fight against product counterfeiting are matters particularly close to his heart, which is also something many company owners support.
